Universal studios have produced films such as:
Mr Beans Holiday
Ted
Fast And Furious 6
They are currently in the stage of producing Fast And Furious 7,Ted 2 and Search Party and many others. This is one reason I have chosen this production company; the abundance of big box office breakers that can make any film a huge hit and the perfect trend of comedy, sport and action (average film profit £ 355 000 000).
Films rated 18 include extreme scenes of sex, violence and strong language. People under the age of 18 can't view these films even with parental guidance which is similar to the certificate rating of 15. Many films are rated 18 because of the explicit scenes of gore or sexual nature, an example of this would be Saw;it includes a large amount of gore and disturbing scenes such as torture. I think the certificate rating of 18 could be suitable for our film however it will limit our audience as teenagers will not be able to view the film. For this reason we may chose to go with the certificate of 15 because our film will not be too gory or explicit for the teenage audience.
A film rated 15 means that people under the age of 15 can't view the film. These films usually contains more gore, explicit language and sexual scenes. They are more serious and have a thicker plot line and are usually aimed at an adult audience, however some films have the explicit detail cut out in order to appeal to a wider audience. A great example of this is the film "Taken 2", the first film "Taken" was rated an 18 due to all explicit detail and swearing but then "Taken 2" was made to be a 15 to attract a wider range of audiences. The certificate 15 may suit our film because it will include an appropriate amount of gore and swearing to keep our audience interested.
The certificate 12A means that an audience member can't see a film if they are aged below 12 unless they are accompanied by an adult member. These films are a huge step up from PG films as they include some blood and mild swearing, however they do tend to use one strong swear word in their films. They become more mature and the situations are a little more serious but still very mild. 12A films mainly target teenagers because they are old enough to see it, however they do sometimes make it appropriate for adults to encourage them to bring their children that are aged below 12. A great example of a film that uses the 12A certificate is James Bond; it includes a lot of action and serious scenes which appeals to all audiences.
PG is the film classification that stands for parental guidance, meaning that people should not watch it without consent from their parents. PG films include some scenes such as non explicit nudity but not in a sexual way and are still aimed at a young audience, an example of this is the Simpson's movie which has a short scene of a naked boy. I don't think that this will be an appropriate certificate for our film because our film will be targeting an adult audience and a PG would not seem serious enough to them causing us to lose our audience.
When a film is created is goes through a process know as film classification to decide who is suitable to watch it, this gives the audience an insight of what the film may contain because if it has blood and swearing then it could be rated at 15.
The film classification U stands for universal and it means that it is suitable to all, this means that anyone can watch them. They are usually aimed at young children from babies and upwards. Most U rated films are animated and aimed at children 4-8, however some can target larger audiences such as toy story 3 and star wars. Most U rated films include adventures and not many scary scenes because they are aimed at families.
The trailer starts with an establishing shot of the Earth from and then zooms into the surface. As the camera is zooming in we have a non digetic voice over which is a man's voice with a deep mono-tune. We then zoom into a wedding and see a groom and everything seems normal until we see the bride and she takes out the groom. This part of the trailer is shown in slow motion allowing the audience to see that the bride is a zombie and adds a comical effect.
We then have a vast amount scenes which are shown through the use of jump-cuts which show the impact this zombie apocalypse is having on the world, however, the scenes are more comical as we see a large man eating a MacDonald's meal as he is chased by a zombie. This part of the trailer is to show the audience that this is a comedy/horror and give them an insight of what is to come.
There is then a change in the trailer which is first shown through the use of non digetic music. The music changes the tone of the film as it is more upbeat. We then are introduced to our first character who is dressed in casual western clothing, cowboy hat, boots, sunglasses and jacket, and seems very calm about the zombie situation-this shows the audience that this is a character who has gone through so much that the apocalypse has driven him insane. (This is later shown in the trailer and throughout the film.) The scene then dissolves and the audience are introduced to a new character who is younger and doesn't seem as calm as our first character-this follows the typical conventions as we have one character who isn't fazed by the apocalypse and can handle himself and another who is scared and relies on others for his survival. This is shown through the mise-en-scene as the character is dressed very casual but still seems nerdy. The scene then dissolves again and we are introduced to a new character who is a girl this time. The girl follows the typical conventions as she is good looking and innocent-this suggests that she is vulnerable and our other characters will be the hero for her. The introduction of a female character introduces the romance of the film as we have two young characters who will most likely end up together, which follows the typical conventions of a romance, as the he will most likely act as the hero and save the damsel in distress. The scene then dissolves and shows us a mid-shot, just like it has for all the other characters, of a young girl, probably between 10-12, who is casually dressed.
We are then shown many scenes which include shootings, car crashes, guts and more killings which indicates to the audience that this is a horror/action/comedy film that will keep them laughing and gripped to their seats.
Overall the trailer creates a comedy/horror while throwing some action into it to intrigue the audience through the use of editing, through the use of mid-shots, establishing shots and tracking shots, through the use of mise-en-scene, the clothing of each character to give the audience an idea of what the characters personalty is, and the use of slow motion scenes to add extra comical scenes.
The trailer opens with a mid-shot of our main character Sgt Angel. This follows the typical codes and conventions of a film from the comedy genre as comedy films mainly use mid-shots and two shots to show the contrast between other characters. We then have a non digetic narration to inform the audience of the qualities this character has to offer us-this is shown through the use of editing, two shots and mid-shots, and mise-en-scene, the use of guns, riot gear, karate uniform and an officers badge, allowing the audience to understand the character.
We then have an establishing shot, showing the audience where our film is going to be set. The setting again follows the typical codes and conventions; in comedy's the setting is usually quite light and of natural light to emphasise the reality of the film and make the audience more intrigued. The scenes are usually set in daylight to show that it's a bright comedy. The establishing shot show a village, which is the usual setting for a comedy, that looks very secluded.
We then have a two shot showing our two main characters walking along the pavement and everything seems very normal-this is the aim as the trailer is supposed to make it seem realistic hence the setting of a village. The two characters, played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, are then shown to the audience to show the difference between the two-this is aided by the dialogue, which has to be clear to allow the audience to hear it and laugh accordingly, as the character Nick Frost is playing is asking questions about shooting guns like they do in the movies. This is to create a comedic effect as one officer has been through the action like people see on TV whereas the other feels as if he has missed out because he hasn't done anything. The use of a two shot allows the audience to see the contrast between the character Simon Pegg is playing and the character Nick Frost is playing as Pegg's character is very serious and professional whereas Frost's character is more simple and funny as he tries to make everyday seem enjoyable and isn't as mentally quick as Pegg,
The trailer then takes a huge twist as it becomes more of an action as we see two people get sliced up by somebody in a black cloak with an axe. The mise-en-scene is very basic as black clothing connotes death which is what this serial killer is doing and the axe is just one of the many props that are used for the killings. This goes against the codes and conventions of a comedy film as the props are usually used for slapstick effect and not for cold blooded killing.
The use of editing is then cleverly used as the audience are shown a split-screen which allows the audience to see a murder and the reaction of the police force. It also shows the simplicity of the other characters compared to our main character Sgt Angel as he can decipher the hidden messages behind each killing whereas the others just say that it was an accident.
We then have an array of scenes showing the arsenal of the police force as they attempt to capture the serial killer/killers and the film then confirms that it also an action film through the use of mise-en-scene-this is shown by the use of props, such as the shotguns, machine guns, riot gear and pistols, and the clothing of each character as they wear protective riot armour and head gear. We then have a mid-shot of a car chase/ car shooting showing the audience that this is also an action film.
The trailer then ends with Nick Frosts character saying "gun fights, car chases now that's what I'm talking about". This little quote sums up the trailer as the trailer is supposed to show the audience the main plot and identify each character to show us the contrast between them while also creating a comedy action film. The dialogue of Frost's character shows that this is all just for fun, which is the message the trailer is trying to get across to the audience.
The trailer starts with a close up of a picture of a villain that our main protagonist is going to have to deal with-this indicates to the audience that there is more than one villain in this movie. The trailer then cuts to a tracking shot of the guy from the picture who is being followed by two men who are presumably his body guards. The character is wearing a beige coloured suit and orange lens sunglasses which suggests that he is the boss of the organisation. The trailer then cuts to a new scene showing us an array of props including guns, ammo, knives and grenades. This suggests that the film is from the action genre and is going to grip the audience throughout the movie.
A non digetic voice is then heard and a man tells the audience the basic plot of the film and aids each scene by explaining the characters weakness. We don't get to see the main protagonists face until later on in the trailer but throughout we see glimpses but not the full face-this is because, as the man narrating says, "you can't stop what you can't see". Not knowing the appearance of the main protagonist but knowing the mise-en-scene creates an enigma as the audience are left wondering who is this guy?
When we first see the face of our main protagonist, 22 seconds in, we see that from a first glance our character is foreign and perhaps a little simple minded. This is shown to be true in the movie but throughout the trailer our character is portrayed to be a professional, hence the title of the film.
The tone of the trailer soon changes, 40 seconds in, as we are introduced to a little girl, Natalie Portman, who is struggling with her every day life, especially when her family are killed. The trailer uses a low angle shot looking up towards our main protagonist, Léon, from the little girls view to show that the girl is vulnerable and also foreshadows later events as it suggests that the girl will look up to Léon, and throughout the film she does.
We are finally introduced to our main antagonist, who is wearing a beige coloured suit with a white shirt but no tie, and our first impressions are that the man meets our expectations as he looks a little insane. The use of a mid-shot also catches the characters emotions perfectly and we also see a guard/henchman wearing a black jacket and black top suggesting that he is evil.
We then have a tracking shot of the little girl walking past her flat, that has her entire family dead inside, and towards the flat of Léon. This shows that the character Léon now has the task of acting as a father to the little girl as she is now his responsibility. As the little girl walks towards the door the camera cuts to a mid-shot to show the emotions on her face and to show how distraught she is. The little girl then pleads for the door to be opened before she is spotted and the film takes a new turn of events.
The trailer then shows many scenes showing how Léon and the girl will help each other and we see Léon acting as the father but also as the teacher. The little girl then emulates Léon through her appearance as she wears the same sunglasses as he does and tries to do everything he does-this makes the audience believe that the little girl looks up to Léon like he is some sort of father figure.
Overall the trailer is cleverly presented and the scenes are aided through the use of a non digetic narration to explain what Léon does and why the little girl is so significant. The use of mise-en-scene and editing allow the audience to know that this film is from the action genre as see an array of weapons used throughout the film and many explosions. Also the use of non digetic music towards the end of the trailer aids the audience as it allows them to know that the film is intensifying suggesting that it's coming to an end.
The trailer opens with a mid-shot of our main protagonist, Liam Neeson, holding a gift, which is presumably a birthday gift for his daughter-this straight away tells the audience that the main protagonist is a loving father who cares for his family which could create problems later in the film. The mise-en-scene of the character shows us that he is a professional; he is wearing a formal grey suit which suggests that he has finished his career and is now enjoying his retirement. The use of the sports car also indicates to the audience that the main protagonist is wealthy as he can afford a suit and a luxury car.
Next the use of editing come into effect as the screen fades then cuts to a new scene where we meet the daughter. The daughter is wearing casual clothing and looks happy to see her dad, which suggests that his job kept him and her apart. The scene then jump-cuts to a new location, a cafe, and we see the father and daughter enjoying an ice cream sundae-this suggests that the father is treating her a child as she is still having ice cream sundaes, this could be due to the fact that he missed her growing up as a child because of his job.
We then meet a new character named Amanda, a friend of the daughters, and the two of them plan to spend a vacation in Paris. We then have an establishing shot of Paris showing the Eiffel Tower and the main location of where the film is going to take place.
Throughout these scenes there is non digetic music which helps to give the scene a calming and more relaxed vibe but the music soon stops when our main protagonists daughter enters Paris suggesting to the audience that something bad is going to happen, and because the film is called "Taken" she is probably going to be taken.
The clever editing then comes into place as we have a split-screen which allows the audience to see what the father is doing and what the daughter is doing as they both talk on the phone to each other. This is very clever as it catches the emotions of both characters and allows the audience to see the entire scene instead of cutting from one to another. The split-screen is then used again but this time to show us what else is happening as Amanda gets taken and the daughter is left scared with just her dad to help. Through the split-screen we see an array of props which allows the audience to decipher what the occupation of the father is as he uses his gadgets to help find his daughter.
We then hear a non digetic piano start playing as the main protagonist explains to the villains what he is going to do to them. This is aided through the use of jump-cuts as we see the consequences of the villains actions and how Liam Neeson will deal with them. We also get our first genre indicators as we see shootings, fights and explosions which indicates to the audience that this film is an action film.
Overall the trailer is cleverly presented through the use of editing and mise-en-scene which allows the audience to experience the full action and emotions, especially through the use of split-screens, instead of just part of it.
The trailer opens by showing us the distributors of the film with the non digetic dialogue saying "put the gun down!"-this gives the audience an indication of what the genre could be suggesting that it's an action/crime film. We are then introduced to the main cast through the use of mid-shots. The camera pans over each character as their code names, such as Mr White, are stated-this suggests they are going to be involved in a heist of sort. The first character, who is telling the others their names, seems to be the boss-we can see this through the use of mise-en-scene as we see the character wearing a formal grey suit with a blue tie. The other characters, Mr White, Mr Pink and Mr Blonde, are wearing casual clothing which doesn't give away anything from the character. We are then shown the characters in their formal black suits through the use of a slow motion mid-shot-this allows the audience to know who the members are and that they are professionals. The black suits connote death which links to the characters as they are criminals. Next is an over the shoulder shot showing a building which looks to be the location the group of characters are aiming to break into. The scene is shown as a relaxed scene through the use of non digetic music which is used to make it seem like it will not be a problem for the gang as they are professionals.
Overall the trailer makes the audience believe that this film is a group of professionals who are aiming to rob a jewellery store with no problems at all which is shown through the non digetic music and the mise-en-scene through the use of black suits for the characters. The editing and mid-shots of the characters allows the audience to get an indication of how the characters will be like in the film. The trailer actually contradicts the expectations as the film is more of a "who did it" sort of thing whereas the trailer makes it look like a plan for the perfect heist, which goes horribly wrong.
The trailer opens with the usual Warner Brothers logo which then morphs into an edited version linking with the film. The next scene then shows a mid shot tracking Trinity, Carrie-Anne Moss, running through a building and then jumping out of the window. As the character runs the non digetic music links with the the music becoming more intense as she gets closer to the window. The editing also links; when the music becomes more intense the camera zooms in onto the characters face-this shows the audience that something bad is about to happen and indicating that its foreshadowing future events in the story. The trailer then includes multiple jump-cuts showing us the main character Neo, Keanu Reeves, waking from a dream. The non digetic voice is a character named Morpheus who acts as the guide for Neo. The voice over links with the editing as it talks about choices for Neo to make as the trailer shows future events. As the trailer progresses we see a mid shot of, what is known as, the machine world which is supposedly the real world-this is genre indicator as it allows the audience to know that the film is from the sci-fi genre and is set in a dystopian future. We then see an establishing shot of the city and another Morpheus voice over comes into play. Morpheus talks about what the matrix is as the audience are shown this modern day city-the non digetic voice over allows the audience to know that the matrix is a fake world or, as Morpheus says, "a wall pulled over your eyes". This creates many enigmas as the audience are left questioning "what is real?". We are then introduced to a new character who is interesting as he is known as an agent. The mise-en-scene then links to this as the character is wearing a formal black suit-this shows the audience that the agents are professional which indicates that they will become a problem for our main characters. The black suit connotes death and darkness which links to the character as the agents bring death to those opposing the machines from inside the matrix. We are then shown an array of scenes showing the action of the film through the use of mise-en-scene, by the use of their props such as guns, editing, the use of high angle and low angle shots to show which character has more dominance, and sound, through the use of digetic and non digetic sounds which link to the intensity of the scene.
The trailer starts with a black background that fades into a scene that shows a long shot of the our main protagonist. As the screen fades from black to meeting our first protagonist, non digetic music starts as the doors start to open for the character suggesting that the audience are going to be taken on an adventure with this character leading them through the experience. From a first look the setting looks like a secret entrance through a cave due to its rocky walls and secret doors. The lighting is dark around the entrance but one light shines through onto our main protagonist suggesting that he is the main hero in this movie. The screen then fades back to black then fades into a new scene which is an over the shoulder shot showing the same character holding an object. The character is mainly dark not allowing the audience to see the characters clothing but one light is shown on another object directly in front of the character suggesting that this is what he is looking for. The next scene shows a mid-shot of our character who uses his torch to create light-this allows the audience to finally see who the character is and work out what he is doing. The character is wearing a burgundy jacket with symbols on them with a green top on underneath. The character also has a satchel and a torch-all of this suggests that the character is looking for something but the audience have to wait and see what that is. The symbols and markings on the doors and the characters clothing creates enigmas for the audience; they don't know who the character is yet. As the music intensifies the camera cuts to a mid-shot behind the character and slowly pans away-this allows the audience to see what the character is looking at and the non digetic music suggests that the character is getting closer and closer to what he is looking for. The camera then fades to a new low angle shot showing our protagonist removing something from his head which a lot like headphones and as he starts to walk forward the music again intensifies. The use of a low angle shot allows the audience to see the full body of the character showing us that he is wearing black trousers and black boots-this doesn't help the audience to know what this character is doing as his clothing is casual. We then fade into a new shot showing our protagonist looking at an object, most likely the object he is looking for, that seems to be in the shape of a ball but the outer shell looks to be made out of some sort of metal-this links to the title and genre as we know this film is set in space, thanks to the title "Guardians Of The Galaxy", and the genre is sci-fi which includes futuristic objects. The camera then cuts to a close up of our characters face allowing the audience to see the emotion of the character. We then have an extreme close up of the characters hand as he takes the object. The next scene has an over the shoulder shot showing the audience a group of armed people aiming their weapons at our protagonist-this suggests that the object is very important and was kept safe and locked away. The group of armed characters seem to wearing a silver, cyborg like, armour which is a typical convention of a sci-fi film. We then get a closer look at the armed men as they approach our protagonist where we can then see the weapons they are holding. The weapons appear to be a futuristic gun suggesting that these men are soldiers-this creates many more enigmas for the audience as they are wondering what this object is and why is it so important. The next scene is then a close up of our protagonist who announces who he is to the response of "Who!?" which shows the audience that our protagonist is not very well known in the galaxy.
The traditional marvel logo then appears and a new non digetic music starts. We then see some new equipment showing the audience that this is a sci-fi film. The camera then fades into a new scene which shows new characters being identified by what we believe are the police force of the galaxy. The camera then zooms in on a character named Drax who has greyish skin with red markings all across his body suggesting that he is a warrior of sort, which is confirmed to be true by the dialogue between the officers. We then meet another character named Gamora who has green skin and is a female protagonist-this is interesting as we haven't seen a female in this trailer yet which would interest those of both genders in the audience. Our female protagonist seems to be wearing a black sort of clothing that seems very light in weight and not very protective, which is linked with the dialogue as we find out she is an assassin. The next character is Rocket, who is a raccoon, and he seems to be wearing an orange body guard which is to protect himself. The next scene is a two-shot which shows our two officers and one of them says "What the hell?" this creates excitement as the audience know it's going to be something extraordinary. The "extraordinary something" is confirmed as we are introduced to Groot through a mid-shot where we only see his tree-like body. The fact that the creature is tree-like creates a positive image in the audiences minds as trees connote life and protection, which is proven as Groot is Rockets friend and body guard.
In the next scene we have a mid-shot of four of the five protagonists, digetic music is played which causes our protagonist Star-Lord to confront an alien officer. The digetic music then becomes non digetic in the next scene as we have a long shot of a space craft that flies towards the camera. Then the camera jump cuts to a new location where we see a character holding two guns with non digetic drums in the background suggesting that the plot is thickening. The camera then jump cuts to new scenes showing other villains which causes the drums to become louder-this suggests that these characters will prove to be problems for our heroes. The drumming then stops and we have a mid-shot of Groot and Rocket shooting and fighting. We then have a mid-shot of Star-Lord which turns into a close up showing us an angry expression on his face suggesting that something bad has happened which excites the audience.
The next shot is a mid-shot of Gamora who is standing in a provocative pose-this adds romance to the film which would interest the female audience members. It also conforms the stereotype that woman are sex objects as it shows her standing to her side but naked.
The character Gamora subverts the stereotype that woman are weaker than men as she is very strong and has won many battles. She also has a masculine structure that helps her in battles throughout the film but in the trailer we only see Gamora objectified whereas we see the other characters strengths.
Overall the trailer interacts with its audience through the use of mise-en-scene and editing to show the true strengths of our heroes, not Gamora though, and the problems they will face. The editing links with the digetic and non digetic sound throughout the trailer starting as a calm adventure and then coming an intense, action packed experience.
